We believe that students who realize they can make a difference will become empowered, engaged adults seeking to improve their communities. Students have significant influence in helping teachers select service learning projects and these projects vary (deleted) based on the age level of the students.
The campaign, "Making an Environmental Difference" is just one example of how engaging students in a service learning project can ignite passions and generate action. Students (deleted) were shocked when they learned about the amount of waste Americans produce each year , and how this disrupts the environment. In an effort to do their part to combat global warming, Christel House students set out on a major recycling drive in conjunction with the U.S. Conference of Mayors' City Recycling Challenge. During the drive, students collected 578 pounds of aluminum cans -- 18,496 cans to be exact, or an average of XXX per student! After seeing the success of this program, students then made sure the school was recycling paper —and expanded this to local area businesses as well. Now, long after the initial challenge, the recycling program has become an ingrained practice for both the school and our community recycling partners.
Reaching out internationally, students also work each year to raise money to help children attending the other Christel House learning centers . Christel House Academy Students recognize that by comparison to the environments these children call home, they have much to be thankful for. Whether selling Valentine's Day candy-grams, organizing a coat drive, or collecting aluminum cans, Christel House Academy students are demonstrating their power to make a difference in their community and around the world.
